• H2GD Part 37: Fighting unruly plugin upgrades – WooCommerce and All In One Event Calendar

Over the last couple of days I’ve had a couple of site failures. The first was when I upgraded WooCommerce to 2.1 and the AWD Weight shipping plugin stopped working. The second was when All In One Events Calendar upgraded itself to a back level version and started producing fatal errors – again. This briefly documents my experiences.

  • H2GD Part 36: Not waking from Windows 8 sleep

My new laptop has been misbehaving. I think it must be attention seeking behaviour. When I go away from it without first saying “C U later” or “back soon”, and I’m away for more than a minute or two it seems to put itself into sleep/hibernate mode but won’t restart. It effing annoying and I’m at a loss troubleshooting the problem. I can’t find a report of a solution to the problem that I feel applies to this machine.

  • H2GD Part 35: re-birth of qw

I’m now back in the UK and I have a new laptop. I’ve managed to recover most of my development environment from my backups. In some cases I have downloaded new versions of programs, then decided to revert to earlier versions. In other cases I have stayed with the upgraded version. And there have even been some tools that I’ve not re-installed

  • H2GD Part 33: WordPress UK contributor day

Even though I have been a microsponsor of both WordCamps held in the UK this year (2013) my attendance record has been pretty poor.

    • In July I needed to be in Windsor for my wife’s son’s stag weekend.
    • Just recently I’ve been otherwise engaged in France.
In H2GD Part 32: Battling Akismet on make.wordpress.org, I recorded how quickly my “spam” comment was consigned to the bit bucket. In this video we see uk.wpcontributorday.com doing the opposite.

  • H2GD Part 32: Battling Akismet on make.wordpress.org

I’ve been trying to comment on a subject which is dear to my heart on make.wordpress.org The post in question is “WordPress: Post Meta team introductory meeting” But each time I tried to comment a little bit of whizzing happened and my post was sent directly to the bit bucket. I have no idea why! Am I a spammer?

  • H2GD Part 30: Responsive Web Design with oik-rwd

It wasn’t on my list ( H2GD Part 25: 15 projects for #wcukretreat 2013 ) but at the end of June, just before the #wcukretreat I started mapping out some ideas for dynamically generating CSS class definitions for block widths and heights. I’ve developed my first prototype of the code, as a new WordPress plugin called oik-rwd. I decided to test it on this site, with a simple change to the home page. But there were a couple of problems.

  • H2GD Part 29: Error establishing a database connection on WPMS local install

After updating a WordPress Multisite site to WordPress 3.6 and the latest versions of plugins that it used we noticed some strange results. I decided to create a local copy from the pre-update backup and try the process again. Unfortunately, I had difficulty getting the local install working since I kept getting

  • H2GD Part 25.7: oik i18n the lazy way – bbboing’ed WP on steroids?

After a discussion with Paul Gibbs at #wcukretreat about Internationalization (i18n) and Localization (l10n) of my WordPress plugins – he was reviewing my code for the oik-css plugin – I decided to bite the bullet and see what I needed to do for the oik suite of plugins. Here are the results of the first part of my investigation.

  • H2GD Part 28: More battles with wpautop() generating invalid HTML

When I was developing my oik-css plugin recently I once again suffered from strange results due to wpautop() filter function processing of the “the_content” filter. Since the wpautop() filter function normally runs BEFORE shortcode expansion I was getting unwanted <p>’s, </p>’s, and <br />’s generated in the CSS content. …So my internal CSS styling was not working. I found a solution that had been discussed on stack overflow and implemented that as bw_better_autop(). Knowing how much trouble people have had with wpautop() processing I was concerned that there would be some side effects. I wasn’t that surprised when the solution failed.
