In H2GD Part 25: 15 projects for #wcukretreat 2013 I outlined a number of projects that I thought I might spend some time on at the 2013 #wcukretreat. I didn’t make much progress on them. But I did have fun trying. Here’s my brief report; Only 2 years late.
Travel to Lancaster. Arrived for a late lunch with Simon at The Water Witch. Back to retreat before any others arrived. Boiled water for tea in the saucepan, while the others steamed in the lounge. Pub, pizza then more pub with Simon, Richard, Jonny, Paul and Marko. Got Marko interested in doing some work on editing EXIF data.
Up early for a bike ride to Glasson along the banks of the River Lune and back by the Lancaster Canal.
Spent most of the day getting my oik-css plugin into the WordPress repository. Discovered it had already been downloaded twice before I’d even checked the readme and zip file were OK. Paul Gibbs kindly did a plugin review of it. He commented that I should i18n my code – that’s item 7 in my projects list.
Celebrated new plugin with a few jars, eventually welcoming Rachel McCollin to the retreat and pizzaing again at midnight.
Bike ride to Morecambe and back by some more of the Lancaster Canal, over the River Lune aqueduct. After a quick snack sandwich headed north to Coniston Water for a BBQ with the @humanmade boys followed by some show and tells. Thanks for the nosh, especially the tea and Eton mess.
Joe – vagrant – Workflow at HumanMade. Matthew – grunt – with proper slides! I commented that it looked just like make. Showing my age. Noel – A/B testing the new version of Happy Tables Paul – things he does at Automattic to make his life a little easier Daniel – custom images and other custom fields for Newspapers Simon – Demoing WP IDE and Dev/Live toggling (with test.com). BTW. I checked. test.es is not available. Marko – Media library folders me – with support from Joe – demonstrating the dynamic API documentation on oik-plugins. who did I miss?
As Kimb had arrived that day I spent the night in the Lancaster Central Travelodge. Later discovered I’d left my freezer bag in the bottom of the fridge at Coniston.
Returned to the retreat for the morning where I started dealing with H2GD Part 26: Another hacked site!.
I now have a signed version of Rachel McCollin’s Pushing The Limits. She ignored all my markings where I indicated I had a question/comment.
Just before heading home for the weekend, as I was double booked with a weekend in Windsor, I gave a “DOH and tell” on the hacked site.
Spent quite a bit of the day rueing the fact that I’d managed to leave my laptop at the retreat. Double “DOH and tell”!
Fortunately, Simon was able to buy a nice big box and some bubble wrap and posted it to me by Parcel Force.
While #wcuk was getting started with a pre-unconference social I was heading to Windsor for a stag weekend.
Spent the day at Ascot, losing on just about every race except the one where I bet on the favourite. Early evening attempted to catch up with the events of the day… watching slideshares of Simon Wheatley and others.
I tell you it’s not the same.
