Using a plugin called network-privacy you can hide a WordPress Multi Site site so that it’s only accessible to a particular type of user.
You can use this if you want to create a staging / development site within a WordPress Multi Site network.
How to use Network Privacy plugin
- Download the plugin from WordPress.org
- Activate the plugin on the site you want to protect.
- Visit the site’s Dashboard.
- Choose Settings > Reading Settings.
- Select the radio button of your choice.

Registered network users
When a user tries to visit your site they won’t get past the login dialog.
My wife uses it for her “play area”. She writes all her new blog posts and pages in the play area. When she’s ready to publish them she clones them. Cloning is performed by my oik-clone plugin. It’s a hell of a lot easier than copy and paste.
