• what image does Facebook choose? (with externalhit_uatext.php) – Part 1 of 3

Here I’m trying to use oik trace to see what facebook does when it wants to pick an image from a link. It’s probably documented clearly somewhere. Finding the somewhere is often a challenge. The logo for oik-bwtrace 256x256 pixels inserted into post Well I’m glad to report that my tracing worked and it showed Facebook using its facebookexternalhit API to find read the page and find the images. The relevant field in the $_SERVER global was [HTTP_USER_AGENT] => facebookexternalhit/1.1 (+http://www.facebook.com/externalhit_uatext.php) Facebook then asked for the images (listed edited just to show you a few examples) 69.171.228.248 - - [20/Feb/2012:13:35:33 +0000] "GET /wp-content/plugins/oik/images/youtube_48.png HTTP/1.1" 200 4106 "-" "facebookexternalhit/1.0 (+http://www.facebook.com/externalhit_uatext.php)" 69.171.234.0 - - [20/Feb/2012:13:35:34 +0000] "GET /wp-content/plugins/add-to-any/share_save_171_16.png HTTP/1.1" 200 1504 "-" "facebookexternalhit/1.0 (+http://www.facebook.com/externalhit_uatext.php)" 66.220.149.247 - - [20/Feb/2012:13:35:33 +0000] "GET /wp-content/uploads/2012/02/oik-trace-256.jpg HTTP/1.1" 200 13716 "-" "facebookexternalhit/1.0 (+http://www.facebook.com/externalhit_uatext.php)" 66.220.149.247 - - [20/Feb/2012:13:35:34 +0000] "GET /wp-content/plugins/jetpack/modules/sharedaddy/images/loading.gif HTTP/1.1" 200 2530 "-" "facebookexternalhit/1.0 (+http://www.facebook.com/externalhit_uatext.php)" And this time it correctly chose the highlighted one.
