• How To Get Distracted Part 5: cloning a local website to WPMS via normal WP

On 16th May 2012 I gave a presentation to the Secrets to Success networking group with a subject of “20 Secrets to Successful websites”. It was in the form of  a simple website that I had developed locally, using an early beta of WordPress 3.4.  I’ve now cloned it, twice, to a WordPress Multisite site:  http://rowlandscastlewebdesign.com/secrets-to-success-may-2012/ This is the story of why and how…

    Why?

    Two reasons.
    1. I’d always intended to make the presentation available for all to see.
    2. I needed/wanted to re-use my WordPress 3.4 local installation for a new project

    So why today?

    • I’ve had a request to convert a blogger site to WordPress.
    • I need to know how to do it.
    • Rather than create another local installation I thought I’d reuse one
    • My wp34 seemed to be the place to do it
    • But it contained the “presentation”
    • … No time like the present

    How?

Well, that’s the tricky thing. There are a multitude of plugins that you can use for backing up and migrating WordPress websites. And I don’t know which is the right solution. So I cobbled together tricks and techniques that I’d used before. Without going into detail here’s what I did
    1. Cloned the site from local to www.bobbingwidepcsupport.com
    2. Cloned the site from www.bobbingwidepcsupport.com to www.rowlandscastlewebdesign.com
Want a bit more detail? Then follow the above links.

What distractions were there on the way?
